Teen lay dead for nearly 10 hours as 'emergency services argued' (2025)

A schoolgirl lay dead on her bedroom floor for nearly 10 hours as paramedics and police officers 'stood in the street fighting' over who should remove her body.

Lucy Grant, 17, was already 'blue and quite stiff' by the time paramedics arrived and was declared dead at her family home in Johnstone, Scotland.

But astonishingly rather than respectfully removing her body, ambulance staff and cops spent the next nine and half hours quarrelling over whether the teen was an adult or a child, with it spilling out onto the street.

Her grieving motherLynette Anderson, 44, was left screaming and crying in the garden and at one point collapsed to her knees.

Lynette said she was even stopped from cleaning her daughter's face when fluid started coming out of her nose and mouth.

She spent most of the time lying on the floor outside her daughter's room. Lucy's body was eventually taken when a senior detective arrived and immediately called for a private ambulance.

The mother-of-six and two of Lucy's siblings have been left traumatised by the ordeal after they witnessed the extraordinary argument.

'At one point, I collapsed in the garden on my knees. I was crying and screaming. I was clearly in distress,' she told the Daily Record.

Lucy died on April 15 - just nine days after she celebrated her birthday - after having a seizure

'But they stood in the street fighting and causing a scene in front of the neighbours during the worst moment of my life.'

Police went to the home the next day to apologise and to tell the grieving family it was launching an investigation, the Daily Record reported.

Lucy died on April 15 - just nine days after she celebrated her birthday - after having a seizure.

Her family performed CPR as they battled to keep her alive despite her already being blue.

A GoFundMe has been set up by friends of Lucy's family to give her 'the best send off she deserves'

Lynette had agonisingly battled with the NHS for the last year for her aspiring beautician daughter to be treated for epilepsy after she had suffered 60 seizures in 12 months.

Through 'sheer harassment' she had managed to bring forward Lucy's hospital appointments to later this month.

But now Lynette heartbreakingly said 'instead of going to hospital on the 24th of April my baby girl will now be having her post mortem carried out'.

Writing on Facebook, she said: 'My baby girl lay dead on her bedroom floor for 9.5 hours whilst the ambulance service fought with CID over who was responsible for her as they didn't agree on whether she was a child or adult and what the right protocol should be.

'There was a meeting called yesterday afternoon by senior police over the handling of Lucy's case and the additional distress we unnecessarily went through watching her all that time and not being able to clean her and only I was allowed to lie on the floor and cuddle her but nothing more, and even that was because they couldn't tell me no any longer and I was lying outside her bedroom door.'

She added: 'My baby girl will not be another statistic and I'll make sure her passing saves the lives of others as no child or mother should go through what we have and now my life is ruined forever and none of it had to happen.'

The Scottish Ambulance Service said: 'We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Lucy’s family.

'We are reviewing the incident alongside our colleagues at Police Scotland and, when the time is appropriate, we would ask the family to contact our Patient Experience Team directly so we can personally discuss their concerns.'

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'At around 11.15 am on Tuesday, 15 April, 2025, we attended an address in Johnstone following the death of a 17-year-old girl.

'The death is being treated as unexplained, but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.

'A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.'

Morag Gardner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Deputy Nurse Director for Acute Services, said: 'We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Lucy Grant at this extremely difficult time.

'Lucy had been seen by our specialist Neurology team, who remained in contact with her through her family and GP to monitor and obtain further information about her condition, and further appointments had been made for her.

'We will review Lucy’s case and we will be in contact with her family to discuss any concerns they have about her care.

'We are also reviewing our pathways for deaths in the community of 16 and 17-year-olds and apologise for any distress caused.'
